Morpho Blue (2020)

Morpho Blue originated in my profound desire to change the fashion industry for the better, since it has become the second biggest environmental polluter in the world. It is a mixed media installation juxtaposing the impact of the current textiles dyeing industry with the potential of using structure and light to achieve vibrant colours without waste.

This project’s research has shown that, conventionally, the dyeing industry uses vast amounts of water, energy, and toxic chemicals to cheaply dye fabrics for fashion. The toxic waste is then disposed directly into the waterways through ‘anonymous pipes’. What if fabrics could be dyed with light instead?

‘Morpho Blue’ is part of today’s movement towards a sustainable future build on the concepts of circular design and cocreating with nature. By juxtaposing a polluted riverbed, with the potential of achieving vibrant colours through light and structure, this installation challenges the way fabrics are produced and consumed. Today, more than ever before, we are aware of how precious our health is, which is why consumers have to be aware of the toxins their clothes carry.
